Stone foundation repair requires a little more attention from a professional contractor then other types of foundations. This is because damage to a stone foundation could have several different causes.  The most common kind of damage is cracks. 

Stone cracks in foundation could be due to a number of reasons. Usually this is caused by water leaks. The crack usually appears in the mortar and near the juncture of the joining o two stones. You can tell a crack caused by a water leak as it is usually very thin and it is usually localized in one region of the wall. 

Trees can also create the need for stone foundation repair.  Roots can creep along the side of your foundation walls and cause leaks and a lack of strength.  Roots can also simply become too big and heavy for your foundation walls to support it any more. 

If you live in an older house and you live near a brand new highway or airport then you might also be in need of some foundation repair. This is because stone crumbles when it is repeatedly exposed to certain types of vibrations that could be caused by planes zooming through the sky or traffic rumbling along the highway. 

Stone foundation repair is best left to the professionals but you can do more cosmetic reappears to your walls if you need to. This means chiseling out a little bit of mortar from around the crack and pasting it over with fresh mortar. However this is more of a stopgap solution to a problem that may get worse.
