Structural Waterproofing

Structural waterproofing entails fixing the design or the architecture of your home so that it is not going to need any type waterproofing products or treatments in the future. There are more then a couple of ways to improve your home structurally so that it is less vulnerable to flooding.

Your first step to structural waterproofing any type of building is to build the proper type of foundation. The first thing that is required is for the floor to be raised with about three inches of gravel below the tile. This gravel should also be backfilled to prevent silt in the water. Yet another tip is to slope your basement floors inwards about half an inch for every twelve feet towards the drainage unit in your basement floor. This will prevent water from collecting in your basement should it manage to seep through the walls.

It is also very important to make sure that your house has gutters that collect water. The water can then be funneled down and outside the house. If you do not bother to put water collecting gutters on your house eaves then it will fall straight down from your roof and run down the side of building and drench the side of your foundation. Water will pool beneath the ground and create hydrostatic pressure that can build up against the structure of the building and cause floods and leaking.

For extra protection against flooding you can use sealants and waterproofing membranes. Sealants and membranes are an optional added measure in structural waterproofing plans that can retard the speed with which your building is flooded should there be a disaster.
